When I patch a hole, I use a couple pieces of 1X4 or sheet metal to strengthen the joints. These are slipped behind the remaining drywall, and held in place with screws through the solid drywall so they lap the back side of the joint - halfway on the old drywall, half on the new. The replacement piece of drywall then has something behind it so it can also be screwed in place. The mesh tape seems to work better for me. If you feather the compound out a ways from the patch, it will be less noticeable..............chim
